Whether you own or rent, the basics are the same: see who is at your door, cover the back and sides, and make the home look occupied.

Start with the door. A video doorbell shows who is there and records visitors and deliveries.
Cover the other entrances. A battery or solar camera can watch a back door, garage or yard without new wiring.
Check the rules if you rent. Read your lease or building rules before mounting anything.

We dug further into the data. Only 1 in 6 Canadian break-ins leads to a charge, about half of home burglaries need no force, and Friday is the peak day in Toronto, Chicago and New York.

Source. Edmonton Police Service, Community Safety Data Portal, with City of Edmonton neighbourhood boundaries.

What is counted. Counts are occurrences the Edmonton Police Service recorded as Break and Enter Residential, by the date they were reported, which can be later than the date they happened. Commercial break-ins are not included. We placed each mapped location inside the City of Edmonton's current neighbourhood boundaries. Neighbourhoods with no residential break-ins in either year are not listed, and 2 incidents in 2024 fell outside every boundary, so they are in the city total only.

How to read it. These figures cover crimes reported to police, not every crime that happens. Rankings, medians and changes are our own calculations from the published data, and a change from one year to the next can reflect reporting practices as well as real trends.
