City safety rankings

The Safety Index compares each city with the rest of its country: half violent crime, half property crime (break-ins, car theft and theft) per resident. 100 is the safest. How it is calculated.

Rates are per 1,000 residents. A dash means the police service did not report that offence.

How the numbers work

Where the data comes from

US figures are offences reported to the FBI Crime Data Explorer by each city's police department. Canadian figures are Statistics Canada incident-based crime statistics by police service, 2025.

What the Safety Index means

A city with an index of 80 ranks safer than 80% of cities in its country on reported crime per person. US and Canadian scores are ranked separately, because the two countries count some offences differently. Read the full method.

What it can't tell you

Police data only includes crimes that were reported, and a citywide rate hides big differences between neighbourhoods. Some departments send incomplete records; those gaps are shown as "not reported".
