How to read it
- Toronto: height and colour show offences per 1,000 residents, using 2025 neighbourhood populations for every year, so compare shapes over time rather than exact early rates. Home break-ins are break and enters at houses and apartments; each recorded offence counts once.
- Ottawa (24 wards, 2018 to 2025), Chicago (77 community areas), New York (78 police precincts) and Austin (10 council districts), all 2014 to 2025 unless stated: heights show the number of offences recorded, because population by area is not published with the crime data.
- York Region: one column per town, 2021 to 2025, placed at the town centre and scaled by residential break-ins or vehicle thefts recorded by York Regional Police.
- All of Canada and all of the US: each column stands on a map at the location of a police service or city, scaled by its rate per 100,000 people. The places with the highest rates are labelled. The two countries count these crimes differently, so compare places within one country.
- Tap or click a column to see its figure and where it ranks that year, and the map moves in to it. You can also type a name in Find a place, or tap a name in the Highest list.
- Police place records at or near the nearest intersection, so counts near boundaries are approximate. A grey area means the data is missing for that year.
