Video doorbells with no subscription

Big-name doorbells often need a monthly plan before they'll save any video. Ring, for example, charges $5.99 a month in Canada for one doorbell (see Ring's current Canadian prices). The doorbells here record to local storage instead, so you can replay who came to the door without a plan.

Battery or wired?

  • Battery doorbells mount anywhere with a couple of screws. They suit renters, condos and homes with no doorbell wiring. You recharge them every so often.
  • Wired doorbells connect to an existing doorbell's low-voltage wires and never need charging. Check that your existing wiring and chime are compatible before you buy.

What to compare

  • Field of view. A taller view shows packages on the ground as well as faces.
  • Chime. Some doorbells include an indoor chime. Others only ring your phone.
  • Two-way talk. Lets you speak to a courier or visitor from anywhere.

Common questions

Can a video doorbell work without a subscription?

Yes, if it records to local storage, like the ones on this page. You still get live view, alerts and saved clips.

Do video doorbells help with stolen packages?

They show who took a package and when, and many people find a visible camera puts thieves off. See our porch pirate protection picks.
