On a farm, the things worth stealing are far from the house: fuel, tools, trailers, copper wire and equipment. A Brownfield Ag News piece quotes a trail-camera maker saying nearly 39% of farmers have had equipment theft or tampering, and that farmers use cellular cameras where there is no Wi-Fi. The source sells these cameras, so read it as a sign of demand, not a survey.
What works at a barn or gate
Cellular solar camera. Mount it on the barn or a pole facing the gate. It runs on its own panel and sends alerts over the mobile network. You pay your carrier for a data SIM; there is no camera subscription.
Driveway or gate alarm. A solar motion sensor with a receiver in the house rings when a vehicle or person comes up the lane, even if the camera is out of signal.
Siren and light. A solar siren with a strobe makes trespassers think twice and wakes you if you are home.
Long-range chime. A wireless chime with a range of hundreds of metres suits yards where a doorbell would not reach.
Setup tips
- Check that the camera's LTE bands work on your carrier before you buy.
- Use a larger microSD card so footage is not overwritten in a few days.
- Put the camera high enough that it cannot be knocked down by animals or covered by snow.
- Clean the solar panel after storms and in autumn.
