Cottage Security Without Wi-Fi: How 4G Cameras Work

Cottages, cabins and rural properties often have no Wi-Fi, no wired power and sometimes weak cell service. A 4G cellular camera is built for exactly this: it uses a mobile data connection instead of your home internet, and it usually runs on a battery, a solar panel or both.

What you need

  • The camera: choose a 4G model with a solar panel if you can't recharge regularly.
  • A data plan: a 4G camera needs a SIM with an active data plan from a mobile carrier. This is the one ongoing cost, and it varies by carrier and plan. Many people use a small prepaid data plan.
  • Storage: most cameras record to a microSD card, so footage stays with you instead of a rented cloud plan.

Check coverage first

Before you buy, check that your carrier has a signal at the exact spot where the camera will sit. A phone with one bar there is a bad sign. Also confirm the camera supports your carrier's LTE bands; if you're unsure, email us your carrier and we'll check before you order.

Placement tips

  • Mount high enough to avoid tampering and face the solar panel toward the sun, usually south in North America.
  • Keep the lens clear of branches that can trigger false alerts.
  • Test alerts and live view before you leave for the season.
