Closing the Cottage for Winter: A Security Checklist

A seasonal property sits empty for months, which is a long time to leave unwatched. Use this checklist before you lock up.

Secure the building

  • Check locks, door frames and windows; fix anything loose.
  • Remove valuables or store them in a safe.
  • Keep exterior lights working; motion-activated solar lights need no wiring.

Add remote monitoring

  • Install a camera that doesn't depend on Wi-Fi, such as a solar 4G camera.
  • Confirm your cell signal where it will be mounted.
  • Insert a microSD card and activate the data plan before you leave.
  • Test live view and alerts, then check the app after your first week away.

Protect against the winter itself

  • Winterize plumbing so pipes don't freeze.
  • Consider a low-temperature alert so you know if heating fails.
  • Clear snow from solar panels when you visit.

Tell someone

Give a neighbour or caretaker your schedule and a contact number, and leave a note on how to reach you if an alert comes in.
